John Alvarez

John Alvarez is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and decorated special operations aviator whose career spans decades of high-risk missions and leadership in combat aviation. He served in a range of roles with the US Navy and Air Force Special Operations, ultimately holding senior leadership and advisory positions.

During a counter-drug mission in the 1990s, Alvarez survived a catastrophic helicopter crash that resulted in the loss of his leg and other injuries. In a historic return to duty, he became the first U.S. military pilot to resume full combat flying status as an amputee—an achievement that underscores his grit, resilience and commitment to service.

He went on to command and support operations around the globe, including missions tied to Operations ALLIED FORCE, the Global War on Terror, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. He later served in two embassies and as a defense attaché before retiring from active duty. His career has been recognized with induction into the Air Commando Hall of Fame. After military service John was employed as a senior fellow and faculty at the Joint Special Operations University and in industry as an aerospace executive.

John and his wife Shelley, now retired, snowbird between homes across the country. They volunteer for several organizations supporting our veterans and their families. They are both thrilled to enjoy retirement by spending time with their first grandchild.
